Course Overview

The world of the computing professional is challenging and offers a wide variety of opportunities. This course will give you the skills to develop a career in areas such as computer hardware systems, website development, programming and database design.

 How long is the course?

This course is delivered over two years on a part-time basis and commences in September 2017. Attendance is expected to be one day per week, typically 9.00am-4.30pm although evenings may be included.

What qualification will I achieve?

The qualification title is BTEC Higher National Certificate in Computing and Systems Development.

What will I study?

This course consists of 120 (Level 4 and Level 5 combined) credits and caters for students who are interested in achieving a Higher Education qualification and pursuing a career in the computing and IT sector.

  • Business Skills for e-Commerce
  • Computer Systems
  • Employability and Professional Development

 Specialist units:

  • Website Design
  • Database Design Concepts
  • Event Driven Programming
  • Office Solutions Development

Where will I study?

You will study at University Campus Barnsley, Church Street, Barnsley, South Yorkshire, S70 2AN

What equipment will I need?

You will need to provide your own writing material, paper and folder. You will also need a storage device (USB) to save computerised work.

 How will I be assessed?

There are no formal exams on the BTEC Higher National Certificate course.

Assessment methods are assignment based and may include practical projects including presentations and group activities, written reports or research projects.

What can I do next?

Following the successful completion of this course you can progress on to a Computing and Systems Development Level 5 Higher National Diploma (HND) course, a degree, or go into a computing or IT related profession. This qualification may also enable you to progress to the second year of a degree course dependent on the entry policy of the institution you are applying to and the programme that you are considering.
