Our Higher Education (HE) Business students hosted an event to inform prospective landlords and property owners about the range of support that is available to them.

Four Business Foundation Degree students: Sarah Roper, Jack Cartwright, Jane Guilliam and Nora Gergelics, organised the event to get experience of event planning and management.

The students had to plan the entire event including deciding on the theme, promoting it to the public, liaising with businesses and the exhibitors and organising the catering. They learnt a lot about event planning as well as a variety of transferable skills including organisation, communication, time management skills and working as a team.

Attendees had the opportunity to speak to representatives from the industry including: Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Council, Berneslai Homes, Finance for Enterprise, HSBC, MKB Solicitors LLP and Wilbys, who were there to offer advice and guidance about the range of support available to prospective landlords.

Jane said: “As an active landlord I had an interest in this subject already, but we decided to focus on this subject as I’m hoping to start a career working within an estate agents once I complete my course and this allowed me the opportunity to get some experience about the industry I want to pursue.”

Event Exhibitor, Ron Brannon, Development and Partnerships Manager at Berneslai Homes, added: “Berneslai Homes is always looking to support landlords so they offer good housing standards to tenants so it’s important we attend events like this so we can show prospective landlords what help is available to them.”

Dale Karim, Higher Education Teaching Associate, added: “I’m really proud of the students and what they have been able to achieve in a relatively short amount of time. They worked hard to organise a successful event that was well attended.”
