We celebrated 85 years of education in the town on Saturday 14 October 2017.

A host of activities, events, tasters and performances took place throughout the day inside the iconic building formerly known as Barnsley Mining and Technical College. Barnsley College took over the building in 1963 before it was acquired by UCB in 2013.

Members of the public had the opportunity to tour the building, learn about its history and find out about current student life at the event. Guests were entertained by the Made to Measure Music band who played songs throughout the buildings history.

One event attendee, Peter Davis, said: “I have really enjoyed myself and the staff were really friendly. My favourite part of the visit was learning about how the building has changed predominantly from offering mining qualifications to a range of university courses.”

Lorraine Copley, Dean of UCB, added: “It was nice to see members of the public joining us in celebrating 85 years of education in Barnsley. I would like to thank the National Union of Miners, Old Barnsley and Experience Barnsley for their contribution to the exhibition.

“It’s great to see the progression UCB has made from offering mainly mining and secretarial courses to now offering a wide range of full and part-time HNC/Ds and degrees.”
